I Believe in Me: Day One

Here goes! The first 2024 book run starts here. I’m always excited and curious about how everyone in the group will find it, what their results will be and what plans they’ll make for the future. The beginning of a thing is so special to me.

Day One kicks us off with a rather small and unglamorous activity that yet has a big and immediate impact: clean something.

Say what? Yep, clean something.

I spent so many years exhausted and defeated by clutter, mess, grime, piles of paperwork and overflowing laundry baskets.

The state of my home reflected the state of my mind. I was too tired and overwhelmed to do anything to improve it. But, the state of my mind was also affected by the state of my home. I didn’t have the space or time to relax and feel better. I was stuck in a feedback loop of lethargy and gloom.

This is why I start the book by suggesting ways you can improve your relationship with your home. I have found that healing a hurting heart and a tired mind works best in a home that feels safe, comfortable and relaxed. As I say in the book,

There’s no point having grand plans to do amazing things if you feel deflated and overwhelmed the moment you step back though the front door

When I’m trying to work on a creative project or knuckle down to some necessary admin, my focus flounders if my surroundings are messy. I find myself scrolling on my phone to ignore the call of all the things that need doing.

The longer the ignoring, the more anxious I become, the louder the things call. The louder they call, the more I ignore, the longer I scroll and so the not being able to work continues. It can turn into a serious mental block if I don’t take care.

Sounds familiar? If so, this week is for you.

On Day One, I encourage my readers to clean something. Just one thing, big or small. It doesn’t matter what you do, just that you do something to break out of the anxious, avoidant state that I know can become paralysing in the face of mess and clutter.

My own go-to is often to put the laundry on. There’s something soothing about the whirring of the washing machine. I’ll usually go on to wash the dishes and vacuum the floors. And while I’m doing, my mind is clearing. Movement breaks through the blah-ness and gets my mental juices flowing again.

If you’re stuck in a project or your house is becoming a breeding ground for unfinished tasks, making one thing clean is a strike against inertia. It’s a flag in the ground, a line in the sand.

It seems so small but as we go through the book, it will build into something wonderful. This is the first step. This is the ground floor, this is where we start. I’m excited to see where this goes.

In my Facebook group, I’m dropping the chapter for Day One today. There’ll be a chapter a day this week. Next week we’ll be implementing the week’s activities and chatting about how active, inspired and focused we feel as a result. Week one never fails to get us going!

If you’d like to join us, you can buy my book here and join my group for free using the code in the book, or you can join my group for £5 and read the chapters dropped daily into the group.

I’ll be posting here this week too and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Catch you soon!
